YouView Android app out now, Dave catch

The YouView app for Android is out now for your phone and tablet to help you record the latest telly from anywhere in the world. And when you get home, you can catch up on Dave in case there’s an episode of Top Gear you haven’t seen ten times.

YouView is FreeView with the Internet built in, basically. You can get the box free from BT and TalkTalk. The online-connected set-top box combines live TV with catch-up services from the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Five — and as of July, nostalgia-fest channels Dave, Yesterday and Really, home of Dara Ó Briain’s School of Hard Sums, Ross Noble’s Freewheeling, and Alexander Armstrong’s Big Ask.

The Android app is free, and shows you TV listings for the next 7 days, with a Now and Next episode guide across all channels.

And you can record your favourite TV shows on the app from wherever you are. Connect up to five Android phones or tablets to your YouView box, and you’ll never miss another episode of The Voice whether you’re stuck in traffic or on holiday halfway across the world.

YouView says the app will work on “most” Android devices running Android 2.3 or higher, but it’s been ideally designed for the
Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung Galaxy S2, Google Nexus 4, HTC One S and Galaxy Ace. You can download it from the Google Play app store now.

You can’t yet watch telly on your phone or tablet on the app, but YouView is thinking about it. TV viewing on Android has proved controversial recently, with irate Sky customers complaining that there’s a Sky Go viewing app for the Apple iPad but not for Android tablets.
