Warner Music Group and MTV Networks will work together to create short music videos from Warner’s existing collection and distribute them on cell phones and other mobile devices.
Under the license agreement, announced Monday, MTV has access to Warner’s global catalog to create and distribute shortened versions of videos. The selection will range from the record label’s stable of emerging stars to established artists, such as, hip-hop artist Sean Paul and alternative rock group Green Day.
Wireless carriers, via subscription or a la carte pricing, will give people access to the on-demand music videos. The videos will available via streamed and downloaded format across such MTV brands as MTV, MTV2, MTV Espanol and VH1. MTV is a unit of Viacom International.
“This is a great leap forward in the evolution of our mobile video strategy, and we look forward to developing more exciting initiatives in this space over the year to come,” Judy McGrath, MTV Networks chief executive, said in a statement.
Earlier this month, Sprint and RealNetworks announced their Rhapsody Radio partnership, a music subscription service for cell phones.
