Vudu has announced new 4K movies available for streaming exclusively on the Roku 4 , including recent films like “The Lego Movie” and “Magic Mike XX” for rent or download. Prices start at $9.99 for rental and range between $24.99 and $29.99 to own.
While the streamed movies include support for new standards such as Dolby Vision (high dynamic range, or HDR) and Dolby Atmos sound (which includes additional height information), Vudu has informed us Dolby Vision won’t be supported on the Roku.
Roku is the first to offer the Vudu deal, while support from Vizio’s Reference series 4K TVs is planned by the end of the year.
Vudu is the latest company to bring streaming 4K content to the market following announcements by Netflix, Amazon and YouTube. 4K or UHD offers four times the resolution of existing HD sets but users will need a new television to experience it.
As the movies are streams and not downloads, Vudu recommends users have a minimum connection speed of 11Mbps, which is compared to its minimum of 4.5Mbps for HD content.
