Toshiba 55LZ2 is UK’s first glasses

Personally, we’re not keen on having to sit in a darkened room wearing glasses that even Lady Gaga wouldn’t go near. So we’re delighted to learn the new 55-inch Toshiba 55LZ2 lets you watch 3D movies and TV without the hideous specs.

Rather than using the standard glasses that separate the images to each eye to create the 3D illusion, the 55LZ2 uses numerous tiny lenses to beam slightly different images to each eye, so your brain can do its thing and convince you you’re seeing three dimensions.

What’s even more amazing is you can achieve the effect from a variety of angles, and with up to nine people viewing, which is considerably more difficult than with a single person looking straight at the screen. To do this, you push a button on the remote to calibrate the lenses and track the eyes of the audience, so the images can be effectively displayed.

It has a resolution of 3,840×2,160 pixels in order to achieve the nine-angle 3D effect. Toshiba hasn’t revealed the technicalities, but we imagine the resolution will be divided up into nine 1,280×720-pixel segments. It may also mean that you have a stunningly high resolution when watching 2D HD content.

It’s quite an improvement on the glasses-free 3D effect we’ve seen on devices such as Nintendo’s 3DS, which requires you to be looking at the device straight-on in order to see the effect properly.

The 55LZ2 will be available from December in Germany, so we’d expect to have it sometime soon after. There’s no word on pricing yet, but it sits right at the top of Tosh’s TV range so prepare to sell your organs, pets and children in order to afford one.
