Top movies not out on Blu

For the past few years, we’ve kept a running list of top titles not out on Blu-ray. It started out with 40 titles and has been whittled down to 15 in more recent months.

“Chariots of Fire,” which won an Academy Award for Best Picture in 1981 and hit stores yesterday (just in time for the Olympics), is the latest flick to be removed from the list, which is a good thing.

Warner Bros. has done an impressive job bringing the movie to Blu-ray, with an excellent video transfer (the audio’s also quite good, but when a film moves from DVD to Blu-ray we tend to spend more time looking at the picture).

There’s a little grain in the image and some shots are a tad soft, but overall the film looks very sharp, right down to the acne scars on Eric Lidell’s (Ian Charleson) face.

I hadn’t seen the film for a while (or just bits of it on TV), and when you see it on a big-screen display (I happened to be projecting it at 100 inches), it feels genuinely fresh — not exactly like a new film, but an older film that looks new.

The only downside here is that this disc is selling for $27.96 on Amazon, which is a bit pricey for a one-disc Blu-ray. That said, it does have a couple of new documentaries along with a new interview with director Hugh Hudson, a CD “sampler” with those famous Vangelis tracks, and a nice little booklet of photos, production art, and more.
