C-3PO is about to become C-3DO, as the complete Star Wars series returns to cinemas in three dimensions. Lucasfilm has announced that all six tales of Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader and Jar Jar Binks will be converted to 3D and re-released in order, starting with The Phantom Menace.
The films will be 3Dified by Industrial Light & Magic, the special-effects powerhouse founded by grand moff George Lucas, the creator of the Star Wars films. The results will be in cinemas in 2012.
As much as we love Star Wars, we’re struggling to embrace the news. We’re jaded by re-releases and tinkering with A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, and downright disappointed by the prequels Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. And the controversy surrounding Clash of the Titans shows that bodging an extra dimension onto a film isn’t a great idea. Still, it’s an opportunity for the kids to see the films on the big screen.
In the meantime, the six movies will make the jump to Blu-ray in 2011. They will boast previously unseen deleted scenes and documentaries as extras.
Avatar director James Cameron is working on adding an extra dimension to 1997 Oscar-fest Titanic, and has considered giving Aliens and Terminator 2 the 3D treatment as well.
