Let’s see that again, Jeff: Sky is to show goals from UEFA Champions League matches as they happen on Twitter.
Almost as they happen, anyway. Clips of highlights and goals will be shared to social media in near real-time while the games are still being played. The free clips kick off today with three Champions League games: Schalke 04 v Chelsea, Celtic v Ajax, and AC Milan v Barcelona.
Sky is using clip-sharing service Grabyo, which previously let Sky Living viewers create and share clips of Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model. The football clips consist of free video highlights including pre- and post-match coverage and interviews, with up to three goals from each actual game.
Sky is locked in an end-to-end battle with new sporting rival BT Sport, which is showing selected live Premier League games.
Sky wants to remind sports fans that you don’t need to pay an arm and a leg for a dish and Sky subscription to get your sporting fix. With online service Now TV you can dip in and out of Sky Sports. A day pass costs £10 — not bad value for lengthy events like cricket or a Formula 1 race, less appealing for a midweek mid-table kick about — which you can watch on your laptop or tablet, or on your TV with a £10 Sky Now TV Box.
Sky hasn’t confirmed exactly which Twitter accounts will show the clips, but you can follow Sky footie on twitter.com/SkyFootball, Champions League updates on twitter.com/SkySportsCL, and on Facebook at facebook.com/SkySports.
