Samsung concept TV bends and unbends

At CES, Samsung has unveiled a new concept UHD TV with a screen that can be set to curved or flat at the press of a button.

Bend…

Samsung hit the CES ground running with a range of 4K ultra-high-definition LED TVs — the first, apparently, in the world — but the fun doesn’t stop there. Also on display is an 85-inch concept model with a flexible screen that can bend.

According to CNET‘s David Katzmaier, on the ground at the trade show in Las Vegas, pressing a button on the remote sends small servos on the back of the unit into action, gently curving the screen into the same radius as Samsung’s other curved TVs. Press the button again, and bada-bing, it unfurls into a flat-screen once again.

Like a lot of concept demos at CES, the bendable TV is more a novelty with little practical application. Maybe to eliminate a certain well-placed pesky reflection, or to suit the whim of other family members. Sleep-by-numbers, the TV version. The housing is larger than a typical TV, and I can’t begin to imagine how much it would cost (Samsung wasn’t talking).

Because it’s just a concept, it may never see production; but if it does, we hope the product line is given a jaunty AI with a voice provided by John DiMaggio.

… And stretch.
