Despite having officially launched the 4K Bravia TV some weeks ago, Sony held off on announcing the pricing until today.

The 84-inch TV will retail for AU$24,999, and is available to pre-order from today, with Sony guaranteeing delivery before Christmas.

The pricing puts it well above the other 84-inch Ultra HDTV on the market, the LG 3D Ultra-Definition TV, which is selling for AU$15,999. However, it is the exact price that the Bravia is selling for in the US — Sony normally does not match pricing from the US to Australia, with Aussies instead usually receiving a mark-up.

Despite the Consumer Electronics Association recently deciding that 4K resolution will be termed Ultra High Definition, Sony has elected to keep the term 4K for its product.

You can experience Sony’s 84-inch TV at select Sony experience centres around the country.

Sony’s monster 4K screen will cost slightly more than a new 2012 Honda Civic.

Sony has announced the pricing of its recently launched 84-inch 4K TV — and it’s not for the faint hearted.

At US$25,000, the TV is a considerable investment, but it’s important to note that the price is for the US only — we’re still to confirm a local launch date or RRP.

The 4K TV is undoubtedly impressive, although, we still question whether 4K is ready for a consumer release — or, perhaps, whether consumers are ready for 4K.

Australian’s are often subject to considerable mark-ups when compared to US pricing, although this can be hard to judge, as often each region have slightly different models. Luckily, Sony offers the LED 55-inch HX850 (model number KDL-55HX850) in both the US and Australia. The US price for the TV is US$2599. However, the Sony Australia website lists the RRP for the HX850 as AU$3499. That’s an additional $958 — or roughly, a 37 per cent mark-up. If Sony were to continue this pattern, then the 84-inch TV would cost around AUD$33,500

It’s really important to note that this is speculation. Sony does not, to the best of our knowledge, have any rules or formula regarding the pricing of its goods in Australia, nor are we privy to any special information regarding the potential pricing on the Sony Bravia 4K TV, when it comes to market locally.

But it is generally known that Australia does pay a premium on consumer electronics and, when Sony has already priced this particular product in such a premium range, we find ourselves extremely curious to see what Aussies might be expected to pay to be one of the first with a 4K TV in the home.
