If you’ve got a new Sony TV and don’t mind paying $30 to buy a movie, the company’s new Ultra app for its 4K TVs might be for you.
Launching April 4, the new streaming service will offer a variety of Sony Pictures films for purchase only (no rental option yet) at $30 apiece. They’ll include new releases like “Concussion,” “The Night Before” and “The Walk,” and library titles such as “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” and “Ghostbusters.” The streams will be at up to 4K resolution and among the first to offer high dynamic range, or HDR, for improved color and contrast.
The Ultra app will be available for download on all 2015 and 2016 4K Sony televisions. Buy a new 2016 model and Sony will include four free movies. The service also serves as a “digital locker” for UltraViolet, allowing customers to stream their existing UltraVoilet collections via Ultra. Sony says “customers that already own HD versions of select titles can upgrade them to 4K on ULTRA for a special discounted price.”
