Sonos Play:5 reaches Asia but costs $200 more than it does in the US

Eager audiophiles in Asia who want to get their hands on the latest Sonos Play:5 speaker will be in for a shock. That’s because the “best sounding Sonos speaker yet”, which costs $482 in the US, will sell at a much higher price of S$999, the equivalent of $700.

The wireless speaker will be available in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong and Indonesia on November 25. Prices may slightly differ in each market due to taxes. Customers in Singapore can preorder the speaker from this local distributor.

For the amount of cash you’ll be paying for this speaker, though, you’re probably wondering if you’ll get your money’s worth. The good news is that the second-generation Play:5 wireless speaker packs rich sound and strong bass for a speaker of its size.

Like most Sonos speakers, you can control it from an iPhone, iPad and Android device. And it’s compatible with music services such as Spotify. Apple Music isn’t supported yet, but Sonos says it will be soon.

The Play:5 can also pair with another Play:5 speaker in stereo mode, and its “Trueplay” tuning system promises to give you the best sound based on where the speaker is placed in the room.
