Samsung has confirmed that its 55-inch curved OLED TV will be available to buy in the UK from 5 September. It hasn’t said how much it’s going to cost yet, but it’s safe to assume that it’s not going to come cheap.
The S9C, to give it its official name, will be available to buy only from “specialist retailers”. Samsung hasn’t said yet who this will be, but it’s likely to be stores such as Harrods, Selfridges and maybe John Lewis. The TV was first shown off at CES back in January where it had a preliminary price of $15,000 (a little under £10,000). I’ve asked Samsung to confirm UK pricing, but it’s safe to assume it’ll be around that mark.
The most exciting feature of the TV is of course its curved design. The idea is that it gives a more immersive, cinematic experience, in the same way you watch films on curved screens in the cinema. The OLED technology used in the display generally provides extremely rich colour with deep black levels for high contrast images. How it stacks up against more traditional, flat tellyboxes remains to be seen.
LG also has a curved OLED gogglebox on its way. Its model is due to hit shelves in Germany later this week, although a UK launch hasn’t yet been confirmed, nor has it said how much it’ll cost. I have asked LG for clarification on release date and price, and I’ll update this article when I hear more. I doubt it will cost much less than Samsung’s model though.
