Samsung tunes in Napster with new gizmo

Capitalizing on the re-aunch of Napster on Thursday, Samsung has announced a new digital audio player that can store up to 5,000 songs on its 20GB hard drive.

The company said the co-branded YP-910GS is the only player that’s designed to operate with the Napster 2.0 service. Subscribers will be able to access more than 500,000 songs from all five major record labels as well as independent labels. The Samsung player deploys Napster’s client software and works with Windows.

Buyers of Samsung’s new device will be able to download 20 free songs from Napster. The player will also come preloaded with songs from musicians including Liz Phair, Iggy Pop, The Faint, The Dandy Warhols, ZOEgirl and Madlib.

Music fans will be able to create MP3 files directly from the radio through the player’s FM tuner as well as copy music from a CD player, without using a PC. The new gizmo also has a built-in FM transmitter that lets users wirelessly transmit saved tracks to an FM radio or a stereo for instant playback. Samsung said the playback time of the new device, which uses a rechargeable battery, is 10 hours.

The player will be available this month at Best Buy for $399.
