Samsung OLED TV coming second half of 2012, not spring

Yesterday Samsung had told me its 55-inch OLED TV would be arriving in the UK this spring, but the company has since been in touch to say I was given an incorrect date — in fact, Samsung’s OLED telly will be arriving in the second half of the year.

There’s currently no more information regarding dates and pricing, so Samsung’s glamorously thin and bright telly could be landing at any point in the second half of 2012.

It’s a shame to have our hopes of a spring release dashed, though we’ve got our fingers and toes crossed the OLED TV will prove worth the wait.

I was impressed when I saw it at CES — the picture is bright and colourful, and the thin bezel surrounding the screen gives the impression that the TV is floating, like a very expensive bubble.

It will likely be up against a similar offering from LG, which also unveiled a 55-inch OLED-tech telly. LG’s model looks to be fractionally slightly thinner, and features passive rather than active 3D.

Passive makes for cheaper 3D specs because they don’t need to be powered or charged, but the real battle will be over superior image quality. We won’t know which company offers the best OLED TV for picture brilliance until they’re both ready for the full review treatment.

Stay tuned for more. In the meantime let me know what you think of OLED TV in the comments or on CNET UK’s Facebook wall, and check out what I thought of Samsung’s effort in the video below.
