Samsung Blu

Samsung Blu-ray players can stream LoveFilm from today, allowing you to watch films from the movie-rental service without waiting days for the rattle of the letterbox.

The LoveFilm app is accessed through your Internet@TV IPTV menu. You need to be a paying LoveFilm subscriber, the same as you need to be to stream films from the LoveFilm website.

Through the app, you can search the LoveFilm catalogue and start streaming films. If they’re not available for streaming, you can add them to your list to be delivered. Films available for Web-based watching include MGM’s back catalogue of classics from West Side Story to Dr Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine.

Hopefully, Amazon’s purchase of the service last week should add to the range of streaming options. When the credits roll on your streamed movie, you can rate it and delete it from your list.

The app is easy to use and offers the core functions you need from LoveFilm. Unfortunately, it uses the same feed of streamed films that goes to browsers. That means it’s standard definition — streamed films certainly won’t compete with the quality of Blu-ray presentations on your BD-C6900 or BD-P3600 in terms of picture quality or sound. Samsung has told us, however, to “watch this space”.

A dedicated hi-def streaming channel would be just aces, now that LoveFilm is streaming to new Sony Blu-ray players too. After all, streaming is the future.
