It was almost three years ago that “Avatar” debuted in cinemas, and today eager fans can finally do what they wanted to do when it first came out on Blu-ray: watch it in 3D at home.
The reason you couldn’t buy it on 3D Blu-ray until now? Panasonic bought the exclusive rights for the 3D version for 18 months, and this expired in February of this year. Up until today, if you wanted a copy of “Avatar” in 3D, you either bought a Panasonic plasma, or shelled out up to $100 for a copy from someone who had.
The “Avatar” 3D Blu-ray comes out today and is available for significantly less than a hundred bucks. But you’ve got to wonder whether it’s two years too late.
But love it or hate it, you’ve got to appreciate the work that went into it. The extended edition of the film was released in 2010 and included scenes that weren’t ready for the theatrical release. I was fortunate enough to visit the Weta Studios in Auckland for a look behind the scenes of the repackaged “Avatar,” and the process behind the movie was incredibly in-depth. The technicians at Weta described how they made full-scale models for almost everything you see digitally in the film — costumes, weapons, gadgets — to make sure they’d work in the real world. James Cameron also let the minds at Weta come up with the rich background and communal system that governed the Na’vi — none of which the audience actually gets to see in the movie. It seems that no expense was spared in the making of this film.
