Sky has launched its Sky Go app for Android, giving fans of Google’s robot-powered OS access to on-demand Sky programmes. Hurrah! But it’s only available for a select few smart phones. Boo!
The free app gives ‘droid-lovin’ Sky customers access to its channels in line with their subscription, including all four Sky Sports channels, Sky Sports News and ESPN, the 11 Sky Movies channels, Sky Atlantic, Sky 1, Sky Living, Sky Arts 1 and Sky News.
That’s a lot of Sky. But for now, the app is only available on a few Android phones running Froyo and Gingerbread. Lots of HTC phones are supported, including the HTC Desire, Desire S, Desire HD, Incredible or Sensation, while owners of the Samsung Galaxy S and Galaxy S2 can also treat themselves to some Sky.
I’d cautiously say that the most popular HTC phones are covered there, but it’s a shame that more Samsung mobiles aren’t supported. The Galaxy Nexus is a notable omission — and it’s dismaying to see a new app launching that’s not available for Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest version of Android. There’s also no support for Android tablets.
The description on the app’s page says that “for rights reasons Sky Go is not supported on any Android device that has been rooted”. So tinkerers who enjoy customising their mobiles are also out of luck.
The better news is that streaming will work over 3G, so you can catch some Boardwalk Empire while you ride the night bus home. Moody.
