Journey to Space LLC
Media company Shout Factory is the the latest entity to detail new 4K Blu-ray discs for 2016, including Imax features such as “Journey to Space,” narrated by Patrick Stewart.
While only two 4K Blu-ray players have been announced — from Samsung and Panasonic — it hasn’t stopped the companies that print discs from announcing new movies. And that’s actually a good thing.
The other Shout Factory titles planned for release include “Humpback Whales” narrated by Ewan McGregor, “Flight of the Butterflies,” “Rocky Mountain Express,” “Wonders of the Arctic” narrated by Victor Garber, and “The Last Reef: Cities Beneath the Sea.”
Shout Factory says the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs will feature high dynamic range (HDR) compatibility for better-than-HD contrast and should potentially boast better color too. The discs are expected to be released from late spring/early summer 2016 with pricing to be announced.
Other companies to announce 4K Blu-ray discs recently have been Warner Bros with up to 35 titles in 2016 including “Mad Max: Fury Road” and Fox with titles such as “The Maze Runner” and “Fantastic Four.”
4K Blu-ray is likely to be the last major disc-based video format, as streaming in high bit rates becomes more reliable and popular. Services such as Netflix and Amazon have already started streaming 4K content online.
