While Netflix is still yet to lock down an official launch date and price for its Australian service, the company has announced a raft of content that will be available at launch, thanks to global content deals for Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm titles.
The local iteration of the US streaming service is due to launch in March, and until this point Netflix has remained relatively quiet on content offerings, choosing instead to focus its message on its unique recommendation engine and the Netflix original series that will come with the service when it arrives on local shores.
However, Netflix has today confirmed that Australian and New Zealand customers will be able to watch TV shows and films from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm, thanks to a global partnership with Disney.
Much in the same way as the Stan service drummed up anticipation with content announcements pre-launch, Netflix has dropped some big blockbuster names to lure customers.
These include Pixar films “Cars”, “Up”, “Planes” and “Monsters, Inc.”, and Marvel titles such as “Thor: The Dark World”, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”, and, in the months after launch, “Guardians of the Galaxy”. And, on the off-chance that you haven’t seen “Frozen”, major Disney animated titles will also be available to stream.
The Disney content will sit alongside Netflix originals such as “Bloodline”, starring Australian Ben Mendelsohn, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “Marvel’s Daredevil”.
While Netflix has existing contracts in Australia that see “House of Cards” airing on Foxtel and “Orange is the New Black” streaming through Quickflix, Netflix has not commented on whether these series will be available on its Australian streaming service at launch.
