LG wins CES award for 77

Previously shown off at IFA in Berlin back in September, LG’s 77-inch curved OLED Ultra HD TV is the world’s largest, and now, it’s an award winner to boot.

The LG Ultra HD curved OLED TV was given the Best of Innovations award at the Consumer Electronics Association’s Ultra HD Conference. It was designed to showcase both 4K Ultra HD resolution and the picture quality benefits of OLED technology, such as better colour and contrast than LCD.

Interestingly, LG seemed cagey over whether it was actually the same model as that shown at IFA, saying only that the TV was a “technology demonstration”.

Ty Pendlebury from CNET was on hand at the event and made the following comments:

While on the surface the LG on display today also appeared pretty spectacular, it was a little atypical of the production units we have seen.

A closer look at the 77-inch panel suggested this was a “homemade” sample — there was no input panel at the rear, for example, and the pixel structure close-up looked irregular in some patches. Some of the pixels looked stuck on a part of the screen in a vertical strip about an inch wide, but whether this was source related or a problem with the panel (burn-in, for example) was hard to determine.

Very little else is known about this TV — LG has released no specs, pricing or comment on whether it will even progress past the “technology demonstration” stage and become a consumer device.

However, as David Katzmaier from CNET jokingly suggested, there’s probably a team working overtime at Samsung right now trying to build a 78-inch 4K OLED for display at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2014.
