Kogan’s 55

Strewth! Australian company Kogan has announced one of the most wallet-friendly 4K tellies yet. The Kogan 55-inch UHD TV has a resolution of 3,840×2,160 pixels — that’s 4K to me and you — yet costs just AUD$999, which is £546 in real money.

That’s unbelievable value for a set that packs four times as many pixels as a standard HD telly. The big question is will it come to the UK, and if so, how much will it cost? Unfortunately a Kogan spokesperson told me the company couldn’t confirm if the set was coming to the UK, or the price.

Kogan does sell budget TVs on these shores (though they all seem to be sold out on its website), so I’d expect the 55-incher to come lumbering over the horizon at some point. It’s just a question of when, and if us Brits can get it for the same low price as our Australian cousins.

Kogan keeps its prices so low by sourcing all the components for its gadgets from the manufacturers themselves.

Its 55-inch set features USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports, as well as a microSD card slot.

The Aussie company also flogs a wallet-friendly Android mobile, called the Agora. It takes two SIM cards so you can slip in a local one when abroad, and save money on your calls.

Kogan’s 55-inch set isn’t the only affordable 4K model to be announced this week. Vizio also launched its 50-inch P Series telly, which costs $999 (£606). I’ve asked Vizio whether it’ll make it to the UK and will update this if I hear back.

4K TVs have been prohibitively expensive so far, with only real early adopters prepared to shell out the exorbitant amounts of cash for them. So these cheaper sets are very welcome indeed.

Will 4K ever be affordable? Have you got a 4K telly? How much is reasonable to ask for one? Let me know in the comments, or on our Facebook page.
