There are times, when I’m sat at home bored of celebrities shouting at each other, or being told I am what I eat, that I really just want to watch a movie. The problem is, while my DVD collection contains some great stuff, I’ve seen it all. What I need is a way to grab movies off the Internet so I can watch them when I feel like it. Oh, and it would be nice not to end up getting sued.
American online DVD rental company Netflix has just announced that it will be providing films and TV shows to its subscribers via a custom P2P application — at no extra charge. Netflix operates in much the same was as UK DVD rental services. Namely, you make a selection of DVDs online, and they are posted to you as and when they are available.
The biggest hurdle is how people watch the content. It’s fair to guess that these files will have an unhealthy dose of DRM, so the choice of playback devices will be quite limited — Apple TV won’t be able to use them, for example. But for those of us that have their computer permanently hooked up to their TV, it’s a great way to grab some entertainment on demand, especially given there’s no extra cost.
So, who wants to make this happen in the UK? Anyone?
