The new HDMI specification has landed, bringing enhanced support for the 4K Ultra HD resolution.

HDMI Forum has announced the release of the new HDMI 2.0 specification, updating 2009’s HDMI 1.4 to bring better support for the increasingly popular 4K definition.
The increased bandwidth of the new specification — 18Gbps compared to the 10Gpbs provided by 1.4 — supports 4K at 60fps, compared to the previous 30fps for 3840x2160p and 24fps for 4096x2160p.
It also supports up to 32 audio channels and up to 1536kHz audio sample frequency for high-fidelity audio.
The higher bandwidth also means that HDMI 2.0 can simultaneously deliver two video streams to one screen, and multi-stream audio up to four users.
It’s backwards compatible with earlier versions of the specification, and does not require new cables or connectors.
“The introduction of the HDMI 2.0 specification represents a major milestone for the HDMI Forum,” said Robert Blanchard of Sony Corporation, president of the HDMI Forum. “Our members collaborated closely to take the highly successful HDMI specification to the next level by expanding audio and video features for consumer electronics applications.”
