HBO Now surges in popularity despite complaints about access

HBO is playing “Game of Thrones” to win.

The fortunes of the house of HBO seemed to take a tumble over the weekend when users took to Twitter and Reddit to complain they couldn’t access the HBO Now app. But the app still reached glory, according to Sensor Tower, an app marketing firm.

The app, which lets users view the cable network’s shows from a variety of devices, climbed to No. 7 on the list of the top 10 downloads from Apple’s App Store, just in time for the season 6 premiere of “Game of Thrones” on Sunday, according to Sensor Tower. That’s the first time it’s been in the top 10 since the app’s release last year.

The problems reported over the weekend didn’t appear to stop this surge, and HBO said the issues were addressed.

“There were a small number of HBO Now subscribers receiving an error message,” HBO said in a statement. “The problem was quickly recognized and resolved. Overall, both HBO Go and HBO Now remained stable under unprecedented traffic.”
