Amazon’s Fire TV platform just got a lot more competitive with Roku and Apple TV .
The $100 Fire TV box now has the HBO Go app. Amazon says the wildly popular $40 Fire TV stick will get the app in Spring 2015.
Amazon promised to add HBO Go by the end of 2015, and it has delivered.
As with HBO Go on other devices, such as Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast, Xbox and Playstation, you’ll need to be an HBO subscriber via your existing cable company to get the service.
Amazon’s press release says the service is available through “participating affiliates.” Unfortunately those affiliates do not currently include subscribers to the largest cable company in the Unites States, Comcast.
Although a Comcast spokesperson told Gizmodo that negotiations with Amazon are ongoing, for now Amazon puts the blame on Comcast.
Today Comcast announced it was making HBO Go and Showtime Anytime available to Roku owners, so perhaps its negotiations with Amazon will wrap up soon too.
Meanwhile, in a quick test using our in-house Fire TV box and Verizon Fios’ service, the app seemed to work fine.
