Sources have told CNET Australia that 7 May is the target date for the Australian launch of Google’s Chromecast media streaming device.

Anticipation has been building for a local launch of the Google Chromecast media streamer in recent months. After the initial US launch last year, its library of apps and services began to grow, along with anticipation of further launches around the world. Many outlets were excited by an impending expansion earlier in March, but Australia was left off that list of 11 countries, leaving us wondering when we might get our chance to join the fun.
That launch could be as little as six weeks away, with CNET Australia being told that Google is aiming for a 7 May Australian release.
One TV network source and another third-party developer each independently pointed to 7 May as the date they’re working toward for the Australian launch.
When contacted for comment, a Google spokesperson told CNET Australia, “We understand that everyone’s really excited about Chromecast but we don’t have a timeline to share about it coming to Australia.”
Of course, target dates can shift, should other critical local licensing deals also move, or this date could be a delivery cut off for a launch shortly after that time.
Either way, this is a strong indication that Australians won’t be waiting much longer before we can get our hands on a localised device with some genuine integration of local content partners.
