Foxtel preps for ‘Game of Thrones’ with new Foxtel Play apps

HBO

The long-awaited Foxtel Play app for Xbox One has arrived, along with a native app for a small range of Sony smart TVs.

Foxtel had announced the Xbox One app in September last year, saying at the time that it would go live “in the coming months.” The Play app had previously been available on the Xbox One’s predecessor, the Xbox 360, since the service launched.

The Foxtel Play app will also be available on the 2014 range of Sony smart TVs, joining the existing compatibility for LG and Samsung televisions.

With “Game of Thrones” season five launching today, Foxtel Play has been an important component of Foxtel’s strategy for the show, with the company offering a significant discount on the IPTV service for the duration of the season.

Hoping to combat piracy — or at least some of the excuses used for piracy in Australia — Foxtel worked closely with HBO to get along with roughly 170 other countries around the world.

Foxtel also announced a partnership with the Turner Broadcasting regarding the Cartoon Network Watch and Play app. Foxtel subscribers will be able to log into the CN app using their Foxtel credentials.

The Watch and Play app is for iOS only and allows for users to stream the Cartoon network channel live or access on-demand episodes, as well as “additional native arcade-style games.”
