Satellite TV provider Dish is working on a DTS Play-Fi multiroom music app to use on its networked Hopper DVR .
At Dish’s booth at CES 2016, the company was demonstrating streaming music standard Play-Fi working on its Hopper set-top box and controlled via a Dish-skinned version of the Play-Fi iOS app.
A Dish representative at the company’s booth said that the service will be coming to the set-top box “soon” and that the company is working on a native Play-Fi app so users can control their music onscreen with the Hopper remote control.
Though Dish has yet to formally announce Play-Fi support, it is set to be the latest vendor to join the Play-Fi family at CES 2016 after both Klipsch and Rotel announced forthcoming products in 2016.
Play-Fi is an open standard that is natively supported on a growing number of audio components and lets users stream local music or streaming services, such as Spotify, to speakers, speakers and receivers around the house. The service’s main competitor is Sonos but has also seen a challenge in the recent month’s by Google’s Chromecast Audio.
Dish currently allows users to stream video content recorded to its Hopper product to iOS and Android devices or computers connected to the internet. Dish has yet to confirm whether the Joey would also be able to act as a Play-Fi client.
