Channel Nine planning 3D Olympics highlights channel: report

The Australian is reporting that the Nine Network is planning to run a free-to-air 3D channel for the duration of the London Olympic Games.

According to the report, the network has lodged an application with the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), as well as with the communications minister, Senator Stephen Conroy, to run a 3D trial channel.

If successful, Nine will show a 3D highlights package on the dedicated 3D channel from 11am to 4pm every day of the Olympics.

In 2010 the free-to-air TV networks shared a 3D trial channel, which was used to screen the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, the NRL and AFL grand finals, and the rugby league State of Origin series. Since then, though, no further 3D content has been aired free-to-air.
