“Breaking Bad,” the popular AMC series that ended its five-season run last fall, will soon look a bit better to folks with 4K televisions, Netflix has confirmed.
Starting in June, the entire “Breaking Bad” series will be streamed in 4K resolution to those with 4K sets, the company said in a statement Wednesday. The remastering will also include 5.1-channel surround sound.
That Netflix will be streaming “Breaking Bad” in 4K is a signficant step for the company. Netflix is already airing the second season of its own original series “House of Cards” in 4K and plans to record all of its originals in that format.
4K resolution is the next frontier in HD technology. Although 4K is a generic term that can describe several different resolutions, it’s 3,840×2,160p in many cases. In comparison, 1080p — the most popular HD format — comes in at 1,920 by 1,080.
Regardless, few will actually benefit from the resolution boost. Because of the general lack of content and the cost of 4K TVs, sales of the high-res sets has been slow. Still, Netflix is jumping on the bandwagon — as are other content providers — so it might not be long before 4K starts to pick up.
