‘Allo ‘allo ‘allo, what’s going on ‘ere then? One of BBC America’s most successful shows, Copper, comes to LoveFilm this week.
Set in 1864 New York, Emmy-nominated Copper is the highest-rated premiere on Auntie Beeb’s US channel.
Produced by Barry Levinson and US TV legend Tom Fontana, Copper follows the truncheon-swinging adventures of a detective — played by Tom Weston-Jones off that there Spooks — returning from the American Civil War to find his daughter murdered and his wife missing. Like Martin Scorcese’s Gangs of New York, Copper tackles poverty, crime and racial tension from the deprived Five Points to the Big Apple’s high society.
Copper hits LoveFilm Instant this Friday, 13 September. It’s the second TV show to premiere on LoveFilm after Vikings, and once again the whole first season will be available to watch in one go.
LoveFilm rival Netflix is currently showing the final nail-biting episodes of smash hit US show Breaking Bad. Netflix has also poured money into producing high-quality, big budget new programmes that only appear online rather than on TV, including Arrested Development, Orange is the New Black, and political potboiler House of Cards starring Kevin Spacey.
Spacey recently delivered an impassioned speech to the British television industry in which he described how the Netflix model of commissioning new series is closer to the British way of doing things rather than the US model, wherein many pilots episodes are filmed but few survive, at massive expense.
Spacey describes how Netflix shows “the audience wants control… if the audience wants to binge, let them binge”. He says Netflix has “learned the lesson the music industry didn’t learn: give them what they want, when they want it, in the form they want it, at a reasonable price”.
Oh, and he also pronounced GIF as “jiff” for extra geek points.
