Apple TV adds Major League Soccer, Disney Junior channels

Apple TV added new channels to its lineup Thursday, with Major League Soccer and Disney Junior joining the ranks in an over-the-air update.

With MLS, Apple TV gains another subscription sports league, in addition to MLB, NBA, and NHL. Apple TV already recruited a few other Disney Channel apps earlier this year.

Apple released a software update for its Apple TV box last Friday, adding iTunes Radio as well as features like playing content from iTunes in the cloud instead of your Airplay device. But the update was pulled over the weekend after reports it was bricking some users’ set-top boxes and causing networking issues.

After Apple was silent about Apple TV at an event unveiling the iPhone 5C and 5S earlier this month, attention has turned to a presumed iPad event next month for news of some sort of refresh for the long-neglected device.

The $99 streaming box has been mostly riding the bench since Chief Executive Tim Cook took over at Apple two years ago, despite his comments that Apple has grand ambitions for television. Recently, Apple TV’s incremental improvements have been limited to adding channels, bulking up with Vevo, Hulu Plus, HBO Go, Watch ESPN, and Sky News of late.

But it still vastly trails the selection of its main competitor in the over-the-top box market, Roku. Roku has more than 1,000 channels, adding new ones nearly everyday.

Apple’s lethargy updating a Apple TV hasfueled speculation it is working on a television set.
