Amazon nabs ’24’ in time for series reboot

Amazon has fired yet another shot over Netflix’s bow with news that it’ll be the exclusive streaming home for popular series “24.”

The popular espionage series starring Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer is now available for streaming to Amazon Prime Instant Video customers, the e-retail giant announced on Tuesday. A total of 192 episodes are available on Amazon. The company is also offering access to the “24” TV movie “Redemption.”

Amazon and Netflix have become the two go-to destinations for streaming video content. Although Netflix has a larger following, Amazon has been adding some major shows to its service and cutting Netflix out of the loop. In just the last several months, Amazon, which offers its streaming offering as part of its Prime service, has nabbed exclusive streaming rights to the wildly popular “Downton Abbey” and “Veronica Mars,” among others.

Still, Netflix stakes claim to more shows, and has extremely popular original series, including “House of Cards” and “Orange is the New Black.”

That Amazon has added “24” now could be a boon for its Prime service, which also includes free two-day shipping and reduced rates on next-day shipping. The series has been on hiatus for years, but is coming back next month with a 12-episode season.

CNET has contacted Amazon for comment on the “24” news. We will update this story when we have more information.

Amazon shares are up nearly 2 percent to $342.15.
