The launch of the Nexus One hasn’t exactly been a smooth one, what with all the issues around upgrade pricing, early termination fees, and 3G issues. However, here’s some news that’s sure to bring smiles to Nexus One owners.
On Tuesday, Google announced that it has begun rolling out an over-the-air software update that will not only provide a general fix to the 3G connectivity issues, but also bring multitouch capabilities and support for Google Goggles to the smartphone.
The update is being released in batches, but Google expects most users will have it by the end of the week. You’ll receive a message in the notifications bar when the update arrives on your phone. Once installed, you’ll be able to take advantage of all the new features, including the use of the pinch-to-zoom gesture in the browser, gallery, and maps applications and Google Maps version 3.4, which brings night mode in Google Maps Navigation, personalized page suggestions based on your search history, and synchronization for starred items. You’ll also find Google Goggles in the All Apps menu, giving you the ability to perform searches by submitting a photo from the phone’s camera.
The update certainly addresses some of the issues we had with the Nexus One, and we’re looking forward to checking out the new functionality when it hits our device. In the meantime, let us know how the update goes for you, particularly with the 3G connectivity issues and any other hidden gems you find.
