Verizon to release Nexus One on March 23?

According to “sources familiar with the matter,” Verizon Wireless will release the Nexus One on March 23. Tech Web site Neowin.net is reporting that the nation’s largest carrier plans to make the official availability announcement on the first day of the annual CTIA trade show in Las Vegas.

Although no Verizon reps are scheduled to take the stage for any keynote address, the carrier will have a booth. As the Google Android handset isn’t brand new, a simple press release might suffice for getting the word out.

Last week, a CDMA HTC phone cleared the FCC with all the makings of the Nexus One. At the original Nexus One launch event in January, Verizon and Google announced a launch window of spring of this year. And technically speaking, spring starts a few days before the show kicks off in Las Vegas.

It will be very interesting to see how the Nexus One fares once it hits another carrier. Google hasn’t confirmed sales figures so far, but most reports say they haven’t been brisk. Assuming the business model stays the same and users are funneled into the Google store, sales may continue to grow modestly. On the other hand, if the handset is sold, or at least demonstrated in the store, the Nexus One could do very well.
