The first 4G mobile phone has been spotted in Las Vegas. The HTC Evo 4G makes its debut at the CTIA trade show in the States, and its list of features is eye-watering.
The Evo 4G runs Android 2.1 with HTC’s Sense interface on top. It sports a massive 110mm (4.3-inch) LCD touchscreen, with four capacitive touch-sensitive buttons underneath. Inside is a Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8650 1GHz processor with 512MB of RAM. As well as the standard microSD card slot for up to 32GB of storage, it also holds 1GB of built-in memory.
The camera is equally over the top: an 8-megapixel camera comes with a flash, shoots 720p video, and lets you tap on the screen to focus. As if that’s not enough, there’s a front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera for video calling.
The Evo connects to the Web via EV-DO Rev A and WiMax, with calls made over CDMA. Sprint is forging ahead with WiMax in the States, but it’s unlikely we’ll see that over here. Some networks in this country have held trials using LTE, a different technology approaching 4G speeds.
The Evo also supports 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, and comes with a Sprint hotspot app. This allows you to tether up to eight devices to your phone at any one time to surf the Web via the phone’s data connection.

Sprint reckons the Evo 4G will be available in the US this summer. It’s unlikely to cross the pond in its current form, but even with WiMax left out the Evo is still one heck of a package.
