Bloody Hell: A bloody no

If you’re looking for one of the more polarizing titles in Apple’s App Store, look no further than the Softmines App, Bloody Hell. It’s a tap-to-kill monstrosity of a concept that’s sure to upset more than just your stomach.

One need only peruse the over 4,000 reviews written in the App Store on Bloody Hell’s page. Over 1,100 are five stars and over 1,500 are one star. A true “love it or hate it” App. Comments on the app range from, “if you like shooting people, this app is for you,” to, “this game makes me sad with all the dead cats and dogs.”

The gameplay is simple–think of a shooting gallery at a carnival. The game design is just as simple, featuring featureless characters, aimlessly ambling across the shooting area. Shoot these nondescript beings (reminiscent of the mascot from NBC’s Community) by tapping on them, level up, and gain points.

Bloody Hell lets you mercilessly shoot mannequin-esque humans.

If you miss too many, it’s game over. If you need more firepower than the handgun with an infinite supply of ammo, you can switch to a shotgun to get your kill on.

As you level up, perhaps the only redeeming quality of this game comes in to play. Characters begin to surface, including cats, dogs, tanks (yes, tanks) and a “super” being that flies across the screen. If nothing else, it’s funny to see how ridiculous this game gets.

Leveling up adds goofy characters like a flying super being.

Unfortunately for Bloody Hell, not even a promotional free giveaway can make the game any better or more enjoyable to play. And no, I’m not a right-wing conservative. I like a couple hours of Call of Duty as much as the next guy and I’ve got more than one App that requires you to kill zombies. Heck I’ve even been a zombie in a movie.

Final thoughts
Due to the promotional free giveaway, Bloody Hell currently sits atop the App Store’s Top Free Apps list. This, however, is most likely not an accurate representation of its popularity. More likely it is the morbid curiosity of the masses. If you’re a think-before-downloading type, you can absolutely skip Bloody Hell. If you’re curious to see what all the fuss is over, it’s worth checking out. Odds are, you’ll delete it before you go to bed tonight.
