Cue the jokes about Microsoft giving away “bricked” phones. To stir the hype around Redmond’s new smart phone OS a few more degrees, Microsoft sent treasured executives a little present — a Windows Phone 7 mockup built of Lego bricks.
The adorable fake phone was sent out in invites for an exclusive Windows Phone 7 shindig in November, Engadget reports. It has nothing to do with the official launch in London on 11 October though. Unfortunately, the British press mob didn’t receive anything quite as precious, with Microsoft’s UK PR playing safe and relying on boring old email. Hmph.
We had a little look around the Web to see if there were actually any examples of mobile phones made out of Lego, and lo and behold, there was! Our sister site Crave US discovered this little beauty, via Boy Genius Report — a Lego phone from Alcatel and Digital Blue.
This is part of a line of functional toys, including a digital camera, clock radio, MP3 player and Walkie Talkie, that looked like it was made out of Lego. We reckon if it ever made it here, Alcatel would have a surefire winner on its hands, especially if it aimed this specifically at people below the mental age of 6.
But that’s not all. As we all know, there are a few people on YouTube with time on their hands, and somebody has made the effort to show how you can make a cool little mobile slider phone made of Lego bricks.
We’re unlikely to see anything like this next Monday, with companies relying on materials like aluminium and expensive electronic components, which is a downright shame. Would you buy a Windows Phone 7 handset made of Lego? Do you think this is the future of mobile? If not, have you no soul?
