Dancing iPod nano robot supplies mandatory Friday afternoon cuteness

What do you get if you cross a crazy Japanese inventor, the iPod nano 6G and a lot of spare time? That’s easy: the super-cute dancing iPod nano robot.

We didn’t think the nano could get any funkier after seeing iPod nano watches. But an enterprising young man who goes by the name PachiMon thought of a very simple way of making the iPod nano dance to its own sweet beat.

He’s used the sound from the nano’s headphone jack as a PWM signal, which in turn controls two servo motors. These servos are powered by a miniature 3.7V 110mAh Li-Po battery, with control lines connected to the headphone jack. Check it out, and have your best “aww!” on standby:

It’s lovely that such a simple mechanical trick gives it so much personality. The new nano doesn’t support apps, but you can get it to display animated GIFs, which is how the cute little eyes were created.

Stunned by the coolness of such a creation? This wasn’t the first time he’s done this. Check out the dancing iPad and iPhone.

If you’re wondering why the Apple robot man decided to create these robots of joy, this video may shed some light:

Fortunately we won’t see a Jobsian mechanoid invasion force any time soon, as these robots sort of waddle around, rather than go forth and conquer. They’re lovers, not fighters.

We’re not too fussed about the iPhone and iPad versions, but that iPod nano is far too cute. It warmly reminds us of the adorable milk carton in the Blur video Coffee and TV.
