We now have pictures of the next Android super phone, a successor to the Google Nexus One. It won’t be the Google Nexus Two though — it’s called the Google Nexus S. US retail chain Best Buy has accidently leaked information on the the Samsung-made Gingerbread-running phone.
Photos published by Engadget show the Nexus S looking very much like previously rumoured, following the design of the Samsung Galaxy S with a curved back and striking resemblance to the iPhone 3GS. It’s rumoured to be boasting a 1.2GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, a 4-inch AMOLED display, a 5-megapixel camera and 16GB of storage. Our sister site CNET.com has suggested that the Nexus S could have the model number GT-i092.
But the hardware isn’t the crucial part of a Nexus phone. It’s really about the upgraded Android 2.3 Gingerbread software, the next version of Google’s smart phone OS. This will be ‘pure’, with none of that skinning business phone manufacturers insist on. This is one of the biggest complaints users have about the Android software — instead of receiving updates straight from Google you have to wait for manufacturers and networks to OK it and fiddle around adding their own bits and bobs.
The rumour mill has been turning constantly for the next Nexus, but the pics and retail leak are the most concrete pieces of evidence we’ve seen, showing that it must be coming very soon. A hardware issue seems to have delayed the launch of the Nexus S, in turn pushing back the Gingerbread release, although there were suggestions that it could have turned up by now as a download for the Google Nexus One.
