Real Racing 2 ready to blacken tarmac on the iPhone before Christmas

Real Racing is the iPhone’s answer to Gran Turismo, a super-popular driving game that offers one of the most realistic motor racing experiences on any mobile platform. And it doesn’t look like we have long to wait for a sequel.

Created by Flight Control creators Firemint, Real Racing 2 is set for release next month. Although it’ll run on low-performance devices like the iPhone 2G and first-generation iPod touch, it’s likely to showcase particularly pretty graphics on the iPhone 4 thanks to its fast processor and retina display.

The original Real Racing was followed by an HD version for the iPad, with more features and better graphics. Unfortunately for Android owners, there’s no news as yet on whether Firemint is making any plans to introduce the game to their platform.

Firemint said in a blog post you’ll find more than 10 hours of gameplay in a new improved career mode, which sees you earning money and reputation for your on-track exploits. Like in Gran Turismo and Forza, you can buy and sell cars, and pimp them with upgrades. Here’s a video showing what to expect:

One criticism levelled at the original Real Racing game was the lack of an online multiplayer mode, although you could play local multiplayer via a Wi-Fi network.

Thanks to the iOS 4.2 update you’re now able to play four-player online multiplayer on Real Racing HD for iPad through the Game Center, but this is still lacking on the iPhone version. Hopefully Real Racing 2 will have Game Center multiplayer on release.

Firemint said you should expect real officially licensed cars in the sequel, so far naming the 2006 BMW Z4 M Coupe Race Car, 2010 Chevrolet Corvette C6.R, 2010 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500, 2010 #22 Jaguar RSR XKR GT and the 2010 Nissan GT-R (R35). Here’s a video showing the cars in all their glory.
