Samsung will take the wrappers off its Galaxy S2 smart phone tomorrow at its Mobile World Congress press conference, but the device’s specs appear to have leaked early, via a listing on UK retailer MobileFun’s website.
The site is taking pre-orders on the Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100 for £549.95 SIM-free, with an expected release date of 4 March. There’s also a list of specs and a detailed description of the device, which has the ring of truth in its marketing lingo, and a blurry blown-up image of the handset (pictured).
So, those specs. MobileFun claims the Galaxy S2 will have a 1.2GHz Samsung Orion processor (we read that as Onion processor), a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity, NFC for contactless payments, 1GB of RAM and an 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and 1080p video recording. There’ll also be a 1.3-megapixel front camera for video calls, while the device will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
The product listing flags up the screen’s 800×480-pixel resolution — “If you thought the screen on the original Galaxy S was good, you haven’t seen anything yet” — while promising silky-smooth multi-tasking thanks to that 1GB of RAM. The Galaxy S2 will also play nice with TVs thanks to its mini-HDMI port.
First details of the Galaxy S2 leaked in mid-January, and broadly fall into line with the specs offered by MobileFun this week. Samsung has also been teasing us in recent weeks, first with the invitation to its MWC press event, armed with the slogan “Evolution is Fate”.
Samsung even seemingly leaked the device in its latest YouTube video, although by ‘leaked’ we mean ‘allowed to be seen in a reflection in a window for a brief second’, which isn’t quite the same thing.
The company has shifted more than 10 million units of the original Galaxy S, making it the best-selling Android smart phone yet. That means the Galaxy S2 is one of the most hotly anticipated new handsets at MWC. Er, even if there’s very little left for Samsung to actually reveal about it.
