Hi Atlas crew,
On episode 32, Pete wrote in asking for advice on getting push email on Android. He’s using a POP3 account provided by GoDaddy, previously relied on BlackBerry, and doesn’t want to take the Verizon store’s advice to set up a GMail account.
I have a solution for Pete, if he can come to terms with a third party inserted into the process (after all, blackberry is a third party). Think about why he has a POP3 account through GoDaddy– obviously he registered a domain name through their service, and probably hosts with them as well. The solution for Pete is Google Apps.
I found myself in a similar situation with a different hosting service. I signed up for a free personal Apps account, followed a simple tutorial to set up my MX record, and ten minutes later I was enjoying true push email to my phone.
The great thing about using Google Apps is that your email recipients don’t know anything has changed, but you get the stable and easy to use GMail interface on the sending end. Plus, you get real-time push email eithout spending a bajillion dollars setting up Exchange.
