HTC Desire HD, Desire Z, Desire and Incredible S get Q2 Gingerbread update

Good news for HTC smart phone owners itching to give their handsets a taste of Gingerbread. The Android 2.3 software update is heading to four of HTC’s devices in the next few months: the Desire, Desire HD, Desire Z and Incredible S.

Sorry, we can’t be more specific than that, as HTC itself has been vague about the exact launch date for the Gingerbread update, telling SlashGear that “we are excited to announce that the Desire HD, Desire Z, Desire and Incredible S will receive the Gingerbread update in Q2”.

Roll out the bunting! Er, just be aware that you might actually be putting it up in April, May or June — if the latter, we’re imagining you’ll be considerably less excited than HTC’s spokesperson at the delay.

The news follows our chat with HTC at Mobile World Congress, when the company confirmed that Gingerbread would be likely to be pushed out to the Desire HD and Desire Z within a couple of months of the new Desire S going on sale — something that’s expected to happen in Q2 as well.

At the time, we fretted that if the Desire S slipped to June, this might mean an August rollout for Gingerbread on its predecessors. The new announcement at least puts that worry to bed, for now. Well, it does until you start thinking about when your operator will be ready to pass the Gingerbread update your way after their own internal tweaks.

News that the Incredible S will be getting the Gingerbread update is particularly welcome, as we were surprised to find it running Android 2.2 Froyo when it was announced and shown off at Mobile World Congress. Owners of the original Desire will also be dancing in the streets at the news they won’t be left behind on a now slightly dated version of the Android OS.
