The Samsung Galaxy S is updating to Android 2.3 Gingerbread in a matter of weeks. UK network Three confirmed the news on Twitter, which should bring a smile to the face of Galaxy S owners who were worried they’d be kept waiting for the latest Google deliciousness.
The news was revealed in Three’s @ThreeUK Twitter feed, telling a fellow tweeter that the update is “expected in the next couple of weeks”. That sounds like it could be rockin’ your S before the end of April, although Three added “but we cannot confirm a date”.
In theory, Android updates should be available to all phones at the same time. But manufacturers and networks love to slap their own software on top of the open-source operating system, which can delay the process of getting updates to owners of individual handsets.
The Galaxy S arrived last summer, boasting a giant 4-inch Super AMOLED screen, 5-megapixel camera and 1GHz processor. It launched with Android 2.1 Eclair installed.
The successor to the Galaxy S, the cunningly named Galaxy S 2, is due to arrive in shops in May. The smart phone sequel boasts a dual-core processor and 4.3-inch Super AMOLED screen, and will run 2.3 Gingerbread from day one.
Three has also confirmed that the HTC Desire and Desire HD will be updating to 2.3 at the end of April or start of May, which is less of a delay than we feared.
