The HTC Desire will be getting an update to Android 2.3, aka Gingerbread, by the end of this month.
The timing of the update was revealed via a Facebook post by HTC UK. The status update reads: “Hi everyone. As some of you have seen already, we have more news about our build of Gingerbread for Desire.
“Our testing has gone well so we will begin rolling out the update by the end of July. Thank you again for your support.”
If you own a Desire on contract, you may have to wait a bit — generally speaking, receiving an update from a carrier can take a bit longer than getting it direct from the manufacturer.
The journey to equip the Desire with the latest version of Android has been a bit of a saga. Originally HTC announced that it wasn’t going to bring the update to the Desire at all, claiming that the phone didn’t have enough memory to handle Gingerbread.
Desire owners were unhappy with the news — because, y’know, it’s nice when manufacturers don’t stop supporting a phone that’s barely a year old. So HTC backtracked, posting to Facebook: “Contrary to what we said earlier, we are going to bring Gingerbread to HTC Desire.”
Gingerbread is a fairly minor update that adds only a few extra features (for the lowdown, check out our complete guide to every Android version), but it’s more the principle of the thing — anyone tied into a two-year contract would be upset to hear about updates to their mobile drying up half-way through that sentence.
It remains to be seen exactly how Desire handsets handle Gingerbread, though if you’ve lost patience and have decided to flash your Desire with an unofficial rom (read: performed l33t haxx0r moves), then we’d love to hear how your mobile’s performing.
