A new phone network has sprung up for tariff-hungry Brits. Alpha Mobile offers unlimited international calls with a £30 pre-pay SIM card.
Your 30 squids will let you make unlimited calls to more than 75 countries, for 30 days. You can make unlimited calls to landlines in almost all of those countries, and unlimited calls to mobiles in some countries, including Australia, Canada, China, India, the US and Pakistan. Check out the full list of countries on Alpha Mobile’s website.
Local rates are reasonable, if not amazingly cheap. Texts cost 10p, and data costs 5p per MB. Checking your voicemail costs 10p. Beware if you’re thinking of using data roaming abroad, though — you’ll pay a wallet-combusting £16.99 per MB.
The service could be useful if you have family abroad and need to make frequent calls, or if your business requires overseas calls. But £30 for one month’s usage is a significant amount of money, so you’ll have to be sure you’ll get your money’s worth. Check to see whether a cheaper monthly tariff with some international calling thrown in would be better for you.
Alpha Mobile is a ‘Mobile Virtual Network Operator‘, which means it doesn’t have its own physical network, but borrows another operator’s. Alpha Mobile uses Vodafone‘s network.
