Sony Tablet S landing September 16, pre

Sony’s Tablet S is landing a week on Friday, over at Dixons. That’s just 10 days till you can get your hands on the oddly shaped Android 3.1 tablet, which lists among its skills the ability to play PlayStation One games.

While you could pre-order direct from Sony, this is the first time the tablet has been given a release date. Previously, Sony wouldn’t be narrowed down from September. Dixons also has a two-week exclusive on the S.

The 16GB Wi-Fi only model is listed as £399, while the 3G and Wi-Fi will set you back £499 — the same price as the 32GB Wi-Fi-only model, though that’s not out until 23 September. Mysteriously, there’s no date on the Wi-Fi and 3G 16GB model. Spooky.

Those prices aren’t nearly as competitive with the iPad 2 as we’d like, but then Sony’s not really known for its cut-price products.

We spent some quality time with the 9.4-inch tab back at IFA last week. It has a strange, wedge-shaped design, like a book with the cover folded back on itself, that helps you prop it up on a flat surface. We found it practical — it makes it easier to use it flat on a table. As to whether that and some PlayStation One games are enough to make it stand head and shoulders above the other Android tablets out there, we’ll have to wait and see.

What do you reckon? Is it, like Howard Stringer said, not a question of who makes tablets first, but who makes them best? Let us know via Facebook or in the comments section below.
