Not satisfied with the abundance of Photoshop mock-ups for Apple’s forthcoming iPhone 5, Giga Netzwerk blog benm.at has machined a physical mock-up of an iPhone 5 using specs and rumors as guidelines.

Sure, we’ll see the real deal on October 4, but for those of us who must absorb every rumor, speculation, and theory, this particular iPhone 5 production is quite appealing.

So how did the folks at benm.at do it? According to the blog post, they took into consideration all the CAD designs, hardware components, leaked specs and rumors, cases, and other believable mock-ups and crafted their own prototype, using the same process used to make the actual iPhone, even machining the back from a solid block of aluminum.

They’re taking the position that the new iPhone 5 design will look very much like a small iPad 2, complete with a teardrop back machined from aluminum, and a glass screen. Based on case dimensions that have been leaked, the iPhone 5 is expected to be thinner, a bit wider, and shorter than the iPhone 4.

Some things, such as the location and look of the main camera and the LED flash, they had to guess, positing that the components would likely look pretty much as they do on the current iPhone.

Sharp-eyed readers will also notice the oval-shaped Home button on the mock iPhone 5 in the photo at the top. Rumors point to a capacitive touch button that will replace the mechanical Home button found on each of the other iPhone models.

Obviously, October 4 cannot come soon enough. What is the feature you’re looking most forward to in the iPhone 5? Let me know in the comments!
