The LG Optimus 3D and the LG Optimus Black will both be updated to Android 4.0, aka Ice Cream Sandwich. The South Korean phonesmith revealed the good news in a post on its Facebook page.
Earlier this month we heard that the Optimus 2X would be getting Ice Cream Sandwich, and now LG’s other high-end blowers are falling in line.
Apart from the LG Optimus LTE (which isn’t coming out in the UK), there’s no word on other LG phones, though the company has said it is “continuing to evaluate the ICS OS to determine whether it is compatible with the fuctionality and performance of other LG smart phones”.
The bad news is there’s no word on when exactly these updates will be doled out. While Optimus 2X, 3D and Black owners will doubtless be chuffed that LG has deigned to wave the update wands at their phones of choice, it could still be some time before the upgrade actually lands on those phones.
Sony Ericsson recently hinted that Xperia phones released this year would get Ice Cream Sandwich by March, while HTC and Motorola won’t be updating their own phones until next year.
The reason it takes so long is that manufacturers tend to put their own spin on Android’s interface, and seasoning a new version of with Android their own special blend of herbs, spices and bloatware can take time.
That’s cold comfort to Android addicts itching to get their paws on version 4.0, which brings the ability to unlock your phone using your phizzog, as well as an interface overhaul and a natty new multi-tasking system.
The only way to get Ice Cream Sandwich right now is to get a Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the new Google flagship phone and the first to run Android 4.0. Unfortunately it’s currently hamstrung by a loathsome volume bug.
